520 _aThe psychological traumas of war, which often cannot be consciously recalled through memory, leave unconscious residual traces, perceptible in the structure of the narrative that can be made of them. Based on the singular testimony of an elderly French veteran of the Algerian War, the authors analyze the story of his subjective experience, combining an analytical perspective and a phenomenological approach. Beyond the still-active post-traumatic avoidance symptoms and the account of violence, which was difficult for the researcher to endure, the authors observe, among other things, a verbal density, fragmented by splitting, disoriented in terms of temporality, and resorting to various defensive processes. The specific transference and countertransference relationship at work made it possible for the narrative and reflective work to take place.
