520 _aRussia’s massive war of aggression against Ukraine beginning in February 2022 has radically upset the prospects for research on former Soviet societies. Given the brutalities of this war and subsequent hardening authoritarianism in Russia, the potential for inquiry and scholarly debate has been reduced, posing a serious challenge for researchers whose work focuses on these areas. In this joint essay, the authors look back on their experience of conducting research in Russia over the last thirty years; together they cast around for new methods and analytical frameworks to apply to current developments. To avoid the pitfalls of national exceptionalism and research silos, they make the case, as they always have done, for a comparative approach.
