Cette lecture critique de Kant, qui constituera le fil conducteur de ses œuvres ultérieures, est déjà présente dans la première publication de Fries, « Sur le rapport de la psychologie empirique à la métaphysique » (1798) que nous traduisons ici en français.
520			_aAccording to Fries, the annihilation by post-Kantian philosophy of the main achievements of the Criticism’s revolution is due to a misinterpretation brought by the very ambiguities within Kant’s theory : Kant did not draw a rigourous enough distinction between transcendental knowledge and its object, namely a priori knowledge ; he was then lead to hold transcendental knowledge to be itself a priori, and hence to fail to acknowledge its psycho-empirical nature. Such a critical reading of Kant, which appears to draw a continuous thread running through Fries’s later works, is already to be found in his first publication, « On the Relationship Between Empirical Psychology and Metaphysics » (1798).
