L'hypothèse de l'auteur est que ces familles, qu'on pourrait qualifier de non résilientes, auraient subi antérieurement d'autres traumatismes restés non élaborés et que le nouveau traumatisme agirait à la manière d'un souvenir écran pour l'ensemble de la famille. Dès lors, il serait chargé d'une fonction de mythe réparateur du passé non élaboré. Mais devenant mythe, il resterait lui-même intouchable et inélaborable et serait alors transposé dans des liens familiaux cruels où se rejouerait la cruauté de la vie. Une situation clinique illustre ce propos.
