À la suite de Neil Smith, l’article avance que la marchandisation de tels « services écosystémiques » ne correspond pas simplement à une expansion du capital par l’acquisition ou l’industrialisation de nouvelles ressources ; nous assistons à la création d’un nouveau monde social comparable à la transformation à travers laquelle le travail humain individuel est devenu, sous le capitalisme, du travail social. Les auteurs qui, dans le cadre du courant de la political ecology, étudient la marchandisation de la nature, tendent à négliger cette constitution sociale de la valeur de la nature pour se concentrer explicitement ou implicitement sur les théories physiques de la valeur. Une approche critique se doit, au contraire, d’élaborer une théorie critique de la valeur pour comprendre à la fois les impératifs et les silences dans la campagne actuelle pour définir le monde comme une immense collection de services marchands.

Following Neil Smith’s observations on this transformation, this article argues that the commodification of such “ecosystem services” is not merely an expansion of capital toward the acquisition or industrialisation of new resources, but the making of a new social world comparable to the transformation by which individual human labours became social labour under capitalism. Political ecologists struggling with the commodification of nature have tended to overlook the social constitution of nature’s value in favour of explicit or implicit physical theories of value. A critical approache to nature must retain and elaborate a critical value theory, to understand both the imperatives and the silences in the current campaign to define the world as an immense collection of service commodities.
