The writer’s aim is to show how these translations played a decisive role in the reception - and in the « censorship » - of certain issues in Rousseau's political reflections, especially those dealing with the notion of subject, which was the keystone of his philosophy in the Social Contract. The interpretation and translation of the term « subject » implies a confrontation between two contrasting historiographical paradigms : Rousseau the theoretician of political subjectivity as opposed to the « totalitarian Rousseau », enemy of the political and moral autonomy of the subject. | ||
