520			_aÀ la Révolution française, la bibliothèque des chanoines de la cathédrale de Bayeux est confisquée et le bâtiment devient un dépôt littéraire. La restauration du culte permet le retour de nombreux livres mais les chanoines devront attendre les années 1830 pour reprendre véritablement possession de ce lieu. La richesse et l’importance des sources locales permettent d’étudier, non seulement la destination du bâtiment et les travaux qui y ont été réalisés au xixe siècle, mais aussi le rôle important de certains bibliothécaires qui ont assuré le fonctionnement et l’enrichissement de cette bibliothèque. Le problème de la restitution des manuscrits du chapitre illustre bien les relations tendues entre l’État et le clergé à cette époque. À partir des années 1920, les sources deviennent laconiques : la bibliothèque semble s’enfoncer dans une certaine léthargie dont elle ne sortira plus.

When religious practice was restored, numerous books were returned but the canons had to wait until the 1830s to regain full possession of the place. Thanks to numerous and important local sources it is possible to study, not only what the building was intended for or what alterations were carried out in the 19th century, but also the essential role played by some librarians who were responsible for running and enriching the library. The problem of the restitution of the chapter’s manuscripts is a good illustration of the tense relationships between the State and the clergy at that time. From the 1920s on, sources become scarce: the library seems to have fallen into a state of lethargy from which it will never recover.
