Après un rappel des travaux pionniers du xixe siècle, la synthèse présentée s’attache aux étapes, aux procédés et aux matériaux de la couleur avant d’analyser, sur quelques figurines de la collection du Louvre, l’évolution d’un art de peindre et de dorer la terre cuite, passant de la franchise archaïque au clair-obscur des temps hellénistiques. Ce faisant, on montre combien les artisans pouvaient posséder une véritable culture picturale, influencée par la grande peinture.
520			_aThe article presents the colouring techniques of ancient Greek terracotta figurines, from Archaic to Hellenistic times. An overview of pioneer works from the nineteenth century is followed by a study of the steps, processes and materials of colouring. Focussing on several terracotta figurines from the Louvre Museum, we then analyse the evolution of terracotta painting and gilding, from the Archaic straightforwardness to the chiaroscuro of Hellenistic times. In doing so, we show how the craftsmen were in possession of a real pictorial culture, influenced by the mural and panel painting.
