520			_aMalgré la défaveur dont souffre trop souvent la toute première œuvre de Balzac, il est possible d’y voir une expression précoce de sa pensée politique et sociale. Le fait de passer sous silence le rôle joué par la religion dans la révolution dite « anglaise », et de ne pas évoquer les autres monarques « Stuart » qui, après Cromwell, reprennent le trône jusqu’à l’orée du dix-huitième siècle, permet à Balzac de mettre en avant l’importance de l’affectif et du circonstanciel qui imprègne non seulement les positions divergentes du couple royal mais aussi celle de Cromwell lui-même qui hésite entre la violence d’un régicide et l’appel du pardon. Comme dans Les Chouans et Une ténébreuse affaire, la/le politique dans Cromwell conjugue donc non seulement la petite et la grande histoire mais le rationnel et le passionnel.
520			_aAlthough Balzac’s Cromwell has generally had a bad press from the critics, it can be seen to give an early expression to his view of political and social history. The fact Balzac makes no mention of the role of religion in the so-called English revolution or of the fact that, after Cromwell, the Stuarts re-ascended the throne until the beginning of the eighteenth century, enables him to emphasize the importance of feeling and circumstance both in the different positions of the royal couple and indeed in the position of Cromwell himself who hesitates between the violence of regicide and the urge to pardon. As in Les Chouans and Une ténébreuse affaire , politics in Cromwell thus combines not only micro- and macro-history but also the rational and the visceral.
