520			_aOn the occasion of a study on the morality of Tacitus, in 1686, Amelot de La Houssaye openly criticised the translation of the Latin historian given by Perrot d’Ablancourt in 1640, which had been authoritative until then. The aim here is to analyse the main features of the two translations and to understand the opposition between the craftsman of the “Belles infidèles”, concerned above all with the art of prose in the manner of Guez de Balzac, and the moralist and political thinker who reads Tacitus as a breviary of political thought in the manner of Justus Lipsius.
