520			_aThe rules for the insertion of machines—actions of divine or magical origin—into the epic poem have sometimes been associated with the two camps of the quarrel of the marvellous. On the one hand, the advocates of a Christian marvellous favour a moderate use of machines while, on the other hand, the advocates of a mythological marvellous argue, following the example of Homer, that machines should be employed as much as possible. Jean Chapelain is then an exception as he chooses to introduce many machines into a poem with a Christian subject. By looking at Chapelain’s theoretical writings, we show that he justifies this choice by raising questions of vraisemblance and that he is committed to the possibility of bringing the miraculous or the marvellous to the human level.

Jean Chapelain fait alors exception dans la mesure où il choisit d’introduire un grand nombre de machines dans un poème à sujet chrétien. En parcourant les écrits théoriques de Chapelain, on montrera qu’il justifie ce choix en s’attachant à des questions de vraisemblance et qu’il est soucieux de faire en sorte que ce qui relève du miracle ou de la merveille puisse être ramené au niveau de l’humain.
