Le mythe d’Orphée inspirera, surtout aux xviie et xviiie siècles, un très grand nombre de compositeurs qui déploieront, à travers le chantre de Thrace et sa descente aux enfers, la palette riche et secrète des couleurs vocales, captatrices du mystère humain et de l’indicible. En ce sens, l’Orphée lyrique est la métaphore la plus féconde de l’opéra et de sa créativité inépuisable.
520 _aOpera as a genre was born with Jacopo Peri’s Euridice (1600) and with Monteverdi’s Orfeo (1607). The myth of Orpheus was to inspire a great number of composers, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries. Through the story of the bard of Thrace and his descent into Hades, composers would display a rich and secret range of vocal colours in order to explore the human mystery and capture what remains inexpressible. In this sense, the Orpheus character in opera is the most fruitful metaphor for the genre of opera and its infinite creative force.
