520			_aIn 1957, the use of the title of honorary canon of Saint John Lateran which is available to the French presidents was subject to a striking innovation. For the first time, a president of the Republic, René Coty, traveled to Rome to be received by the Pope and participate as an honorary canon in a solemn ceremony in the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran. While still relatively ignored, this political gesture gave birth to a new tradition – now, most presidents of the Fifth Republic will make a visit to Rome similar to Coty’s. This article aims to understand the conditions that allowed this decision to occur, to describe the modalities of an unprecedented ceremony, and to analyze how it was perceived.
520			_aEn 1957, l’usage du titre de chanoine d’honneur de Saint-Jean-de-Latran dont jouissent les présidents de la République française enregistre une innovation marquante. Pour la première fois, un président, René Coty, se rend dans la Rome pontificale pour y être reçu par le pape et pour participer en tant que chanoine d’honneur à une cérémonie solennelle dans la basilique du Latran. On l’ignore encore, mais ce geste politique donne naissance à une nouvelle tradition puisque la plupart des présidents de la Cinquième République accompliront à Rome une visite comparable à celle de Coty. Cet article vise à comprendre les conditions ayant permis cette décision, à décrire les modalités d’une cérémonie inédite ainsi qu’à analyser l’accueil qu’elle reçut.
