Longtemps prisonnière soit de modèles étrangers, soit d’une forme d’instrumentalisation politique, soit encore d’un système universitaire en construction, elle a conquis son autonomie en se lançant à la découverte des Italiens dans leur diversité régionale et sociale, et leurs comportements. Du roman au cinéma, en passant par les revues, la culture italienne a enrichi la connaissance de la société dont elle est l’émanation. La culture de masse a participé à cette quête de soi, tout en accélérant la modernisation et la nationalisation des Italiens sans rompre avec les racines de la culture populaire. Culture des élites et culture de masse qui se sont rapprochées voient leur lien commun avec la politique resté fort. Enfin, le réveil supposé de la société civile et le nouveau civisme italien fait l’objet de multiples débats et enquêtes.

For a long time it was a prisoner of foreign models, of a form of political instrumentalization, or of a university system in construction, but it gained its autonomy by discovering Italians in their regional and social diversity and in their behavior. From the novel to the cinema, and in magazines, Italian culture has enriched the knowledge of the society it comes from. Mass culture was part of this identity while speeding up the modernization and nationalization of the Italians without breaking off from the roots of popular culture. Elite and mass culture have come closer and see their common link with politics. Lastly, the supposed awakening of civil society and new Italian civism are the subject of many debates and studies.
