Concini became the scapegoat for the nation’s resentment of foreigners. The royal coup d’état and, later, the bloody carnival of the Parisian people as they set upon the body of the reviled favorite marked the passage from hatred that was merely on paper to a brutal hatred, from ad-hoc political xenophobia to legalized and juridical xenophobia. Louis XIII’s deeds justified it and, later, so did the legal measures against foreigners at the end of the regency. | ||
