520 _aGallantry appeared in the XVII century as a bookstore phenomenon : an attempt to enlarge the audience of printed books readers by promoting an entertainment literature. This phenomenon was also an instrument of political control over writings, with the invention of a gallant style of writing of current events. The cases of Madelaine de Scudéry, Jean Donneau de Visé, and Marie-Catherine de Villedieu reveal differentiated uses of gallantry at the interface between the book trade and power service.
