Développées selon le modèle de la banlieue pavillonnaire, incarnation du rêve états-unien de la classe moyenne, deux de ces villes, Paradise et Magalia, concentraient environ 40 000 personnes. À partir d’éléments ethnographiques collectés dans le cadre d’un travail doctoral mené entre 2019 et 2021 (entretiens, observations et participations à des réunions d’associations de propriétaires…), cet article s’intéresse à la figure historique, symbolique et matérielle de la maison individuelle et montre que malgré la destruction des habitats, l’attachement au statut et à la hiérarchie sociale qui lui est associée reste fort. | ||
