520 _aThis article presents a study of the conditions of life of the homeless of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It draws attention to the negotiations necessary for a shared life with other urban space users and for the management of the intolerances to which these undesirables are subject. It calls attention to the particular ways of adaptation and of respect for cultural principles which – in Brazilian society – distinguish specifically between street and home as opposing public and private spaces in close proximity to each other.
