520 _aThis study focuses on the politicization of scientific discourse relating to cancer research in the Early Cold War. More specifically, it examines the relation between the production of the atomic bomb and cancer research after 1945, and shows that the often-used comparison between the fight against cancer and that against foreign enemies originated in the specific history of the institutions and the organization of cancer research in and especially out of government circles, generating a ‘word war’ permeating both lay and scientific rhetoric.
