520			_aRESUME Paradigme du roi sage et juste, Salomon avait aussi, au Moyen Âge, la réputation d’avoir été un roi exorciste et magicien, capable de contraindre les démons à lui obéir. Ce modèle ambivalent a clairement inspiré le roi Alphonse X de Castille (1252-1284) et sa politique de traduction d’ouvrages d’astronomie, d’astrologie et de magie, destinée à percer les secrets de Dieu, de la nature et de son peuple. Mais l’on peut se demander dans quelle mesure ce modèle n’a pas également inspiré le roi de France Charles V (1364-1380) et sa politique de translatio studii, lancée au temps où il n’était encore que dauphin. Une comparaison entre le prologue de la traduction arabo-latine du Quadripartitum de Ptolémée, rédigé par Gilles de Thebaldis, et celui de la traduction latino-française de ce texte, composé par Guillaume Oresme, tous deux édités en annexe à cet article, donne un aperçu des points communs entre les deux démarches et de leurs spécificités.
520			_aABSTRACT Paragon of the wise and just king, Solomon had also during the Middle Ages a reputation as an exorcist and magician, able to compel demons to his obedience. This ambivalent model clearly inspired the king Alfonso X of Castile (1252-1284) and his cultural policy of translations of astronomical, astrological and magical books, motivated by his will to penetrate the secrets of God, of nature and of his people. We can ask if this model did also inspire to some extent the king Charles V of France (1364-1380) and his policy of translatio studii , boosted when he was yet dauphin. A comparison between Gilles of Thebaldis’prologue of the Arabic-Latin translation of Ptolemy’s Quadripartitum with Guillaume Oresme’s prologue of the Latin-French translation of the same text – both edited at the end of this paper – gives an idea of the common issues and of the specificities of the two processes.
