520 _aThis article analyzes the factors that explain the exceptional sustainability of the Beligné family business, which has managed thirteen intergenerational handovers since 1610. Its contribution is based on combining three academic currents on family businesses to explain the success of this family dynasty. Sonnenfeld’s (1988) typology of four retirement styles, Irving and Sharma’s (2005) model of the four bases of family business successor commitment, and the five-dimensional method of observing socioemotional wealth, referred to by the acronym FIBER by Berrone, Cruz, and Gómez-Mejía (2012). Our results show that the identification with the company of sellers and buyers, who demonstrate, respectively, “ambassador” behavior and “emotional” behavior, favors the adaptation of the family business to economic developments.
