520 _aBased on the critics of the ideological use of ethnic categories in French Polynesia, this article shows that such categories as «maohi» (native) and «popaa» (white stranger) are a founding opposition in Tahiti. Moreover, the two etnocultural groups, «maohi» and «half» (persons from mixed marriages) are objectively visible as far as culture, economy and social are concerned. Yet, the elite mainly «half» uses the «maohi» category in order to build a nation — state of which they would be the primary beneficiary
