520 _aThe upsurge of modernity and multiculturalism have led to the assertion of the Kanak Ego in relation to the non-indigenous Other. In this perspective, the recent appropriation of the Kanak word by the distant descendants of the first arrivals has proved to be a bearer of meaning. Indeed, article 1.5 of the preamble of the Noumea Agreement provides that « identifying symbols of the country, name, flag, anthem, currency, banknote illustrations, must be sought together, to express the Kanak identity and future sharing between all ». It was thus important to create the etymology of the Kanak term and to position this identifying symbol with regard to the multicultural Caledonian kaleidoscope.
