520 _a‪Although estimating the volume of wood in forests has long been a concern of silvicultural science, the issue remains poorly documented for the periods before the creation of the first national inventories. This article invites researchers to pay more attention to this question and provides an overview of the sources and reconstruction methods that can provide an idea of the volume of wood present in past forests. Despite their imperfections and the caution with which they should be used, the volume data are essential for the historians. They are an effective complement to data on forest area and can be used to approach historical forms of forest degradation in quantitative terms.‪
