Premièrement, il existe des tensions de longue date entre le Vatican, qui veut alors mettre la priorité sur l’avancement d’un clergé africain, et des missionnaires français sur le terrain. Deuxièmement, au moment de la décolonisation, le Vatican se tourne vers la génération montante du clergé africain, dont Hyacinthe Thiandoum, afin de gérer des situations politiques épineuses. 520			_aThis article examines the career of Hyacinthe Thiandoum, the first African archbishop of Dakar in order to illustrate four key themes pertaining to the transition of the Catholic Church in Africa from an institution built by European missionaries in the colonial era to an African-led church in independent states. First of all, there were long-term tensions between the Vatican, which wanted to prioritize the training and promotion of African clergy, and French missionaries on the ground. Second, as political decolonization unfolded, the Vatican turned to Thiandoum and men of his generation to manage difficult political situations. Third, Thiandoum and his peers seized the occasion of the Second Vatican Council to reimagine the Catholic Church in Africa and the world. Finally, however, his complex and varied opinions offer proof that African prelates of his generation were not always aligned with progressive European Catholics.
