520 _aLong overlooked by historians and philosophers, Machiavelli’s reflection on social conflict has become a central feature of recent scholarship. However, most of the current interpretations tend to read his understanding of plebeian tumults through categories that are foreign to Renaissance political thought. On the contrary, this article aims to prove that the Discourses have much to gain from a historicizing interpretation of the problem.
