520 | _aIt is sometimes thought that the Dutch pronoun u is in danger of dying out, because of 1) frequent confusion between polite u and informal jij/je, and 2) the large domain loss u has undergone. The article shows that (1) pronoun switching reveals an in-depth knowledge of conflicts within the address system, and (2) loss is not the same for T as for V forms. T disappears when it loses domain ; V is threatened when an increase in its domain leads to a loss in its particularity. The limited domain of u is thus not a threat but rather a factor tending to support its survival. It is concluded that the pronoun u is not at risk. | ||
