520			_aThis article examines the methodological and ethical challenges of the interpretive approach through two research projects conducted in Russia before and after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, situated within broader debates on challenging fieldwork. Drawing on one study carried out in Dagestan (2013–2016) and another conducted with independent trade union activists (2023–2024) in Moscow and in several countries of their emigration, it offers a reflexive discussion of the notion of danger, the methodological adjustments made during fieldwork, and the researcher’s statuses and positionalities. It outlines the dilemmas involved in disseminating research findings amid the competing demands of scientific transparency, respect for agency, and the protection of research participants.
