We need guidelines to propose new forms of teaching psychotherapy.Research can help us in this endeavour. Our research on mother-infant psychotherapy shows that therapists and patients differ greatly in their goals and ideals. Clinicians aim at following a precise technique; patients want mainly to be understood. Patients are able to contribute to the choice of indication.We now ask them to decide what form of therapy they would prefer.
