Ressource ancienne, structurée par une longue histoire de gestion, elle est aujourd’hui confrontée à des bouleversements majeurs liés au changement climatique, à la pression anthropique, à la perte de biodiversité et aux tensions sur la filière bois. Cet article propose une analyse globale de la forêt française, depuis sa définition et ses dynamiques historiques jusqu’aux menaces actuelles : sécheresses, dépérissements, tempêtes, incendies et émergence des mégafeux. Il met en lumière les acteurs de sa gouvernance, les conflits d’usages et les enjeux géopolitiques liés aux marchés du bois. À travers plusieurs études de cas, l’article interroge les capacités d’adaptation de la forêt française et souligne l’importance d’une gestion durable fondée sur la prévention, la résilience des écosystèmes et la mobilisation collective.

This article offers a comprehensive analysis of French forests, from their definition and historical dynamics to the current threats they face: droughts, forest decline, storms, wildfires, and the emergence of megafires. It highlights the key actors involved in forest governance, conflicts of use, and the geopolitical stakes of the global timber market. Through several case studies, the article examines the adaptive capacities of French forests and emphasizes the crucial importance of sustainable management based on prevention, ecosystem resilience, and collective mobilization.
