520 _aWriters at the end of the 19th century began a new literary epoch with their travelogues set in the Far East. With the marriage of this trend with the European expansion of the time, those writings constitute an important part of the colonial and literary discourse of the time. The combination and parallel development of Exoticism, a fascination for the Other and colonial discourse caused the birth of two tendencies, positive and negative. This polarization shows that travelogues are not so much a discourse of self-discovery through the Other than a discourse on the Other.
