520 _aResearch on the specific features of families with migrant backgrounds in parenting support actions is scant. To fill this gap, a qualitative survey was conducted in 2018 combining observations of actions and interviews among support actors and participating parents. This research reveals the existence of different stances among support actors, in both their practices and discourse, concerning languages used by families. When these stances are based on a specific model of social integration, they are located on a continuum ranging from an emphasis on the exclusive use of French, which comes close to an assimilationist approach to integration and which predominates, to the rarer and more recent emphasis on multilingualism. Between these two ideal-typical models, in which practices and discourses overlap, stand hybrid stances. This relation to the language of origin is multifaceted and depends on how the dominant institutional discourse engages with the support actors’ viewpoints, which are grounded in their own life paths.
