520 _aThe AFP Corpus project, funded by the ANR (a French state research agency), opened unpublished and in many ways unclassified archives to academic researchers. These archives, relating to the third of the three main world news agencies, were initially compiled by and for agency journalists. They include in-house material—mostly news-agency copy— compiled by the Paris-based agency’s documentation service. They are broadly classified by country, by theme and topic, and by people in the news. Another AFP collection comprises photos. As a researcher involved in the project, our approach—informed by the disciplines of information and communication science and media sociology- focused on how to understand and use this material. The latter informs both an understanding of the events themselves and of news-agency journalism, which itself evolved over time, as indeed did AFP.
