Thought about this subject has become more and more complex and today we are facing what has been called “a crisis of legitimacy.” In order to understand it, this article reminds us of the meaning of the concept, its evolution, and its current applications in the field of politics and social action (NGOs, social institutions, and professions). The author discusses the legitimacy of service users and citizens. In relation to them, the author analyzes what’s at stake in the complex evolution of legitimacy and what challenges must be faced in order to gain recognition for legitimacy.
