520			_aDans les cent dernières pages du Temps retrouvé, le Narrateur de À la recherche du temps perdu est frappé, lors d’une matinée chez les Guermantes, par le vieillissement brutal des personnages qu’il a connus, par l’influence considérable que le temps a eue sur leur corps. Ce constat, et les réflexions qu’il appelle chez le Narrateur, constituent l’épisode bien connu du « Bal des têtes », galerie de portraits des personnages du roman. Les marques du temps sur les corps en général, et sur les visages en particulier, suscitent chez le Narrateur un étonnement proprement philosophique et une réflexion très profonde sur les rapports entre le corps et le temps. Au fil de cette réflexion, il est suggéré que le temps ne doit pas être considéré comme une force destructrice ou créatrice s’exerçant de l’extérieur sur les corps. Proust nous invite au contraire à envisager les corps vieillissants comme des corps où le Temps est « incorporé ».

This observation, and the resultant thoughts raised in the Narrator’s mind, constitute the very famous episode called « Le Bal des têtes », an amazing portrait gallery of the main characters of the book. The marks of time on the bodies in general, and in particular on the faces, give rise in the Narrator to a philosophical astonishment and lead him to a very deep insight on the relations between body and time. This reflection suggests that time should not be considered as a destructive or creative force, acting on the bodies from the outside. Rather, Proust invites us to consider ageing bodies as bodies in which Time has been « embodied ».
