La Mission Mélanésienne créée par l’évêque anglican Selwyn avait une tout autre vision de l’évangélisation que la Société des Missions de Londres (LMS) : elle n’approuvait pas les conversions rapides et cherchait d’abord à former des ministres. Les indigènes se méfiaient des Blancs à cause des santaliers cherchant à s’installer et à piller les forêts. Cette mission anglicane exploratoire de 1850 n’aura pas de suite car ce sont la LMS en 1856 et les Pères Maristes en 1857 qui vont christianiser durablement l’île dans un contexte extrêmement tendu avant de trouver un équilibre au tournant du xxe siècle. | ||
| 520 | _aThe beginnings of the Protestant Evangelization in the Island of Uvea (Loyalty) in New CaledoniaThis paper deals with the first contact between the Anglican Melanesian Mission and the island of Uvea (Loyalty) in New Caledonia. The report is based on William Nihill’s diary, a young missionary who travelled to Uvea in 1850. At this time, there were few relationships between Europeans and Loyalty Natives. Bishop Selwyn’s Melanesian Mission did not look on the process of evangelization in the same way as the London Missionary Society. Selwyn did not agree with rapid mass conversions but wanted to establish a good training for indigenous ministers. The natives of the Loyalty islands mistrusted the sandalwood traders who tried to settle in the island and who plundered the forests. This exploratory Anglican mission of 1850 did not have a follow up. It was the LMS in 1856 and the Catholic Marists in 1857 that took over the missionary work on the island in a very tense atmosphere, until they finally achieved some stability and peaceful relationships at the beginning of the 20th century. | ||
