520			_aLe regard que les auteurs allemands portent sur David se distingue du regard français : si l'importance du « révolutionnaire » occupe aussi les Français, il est perçu outre-Rhin comme une manifestation éminement française, résultant de la philosophie des Lumières et correspondant à un trait psychologique national. C'est ainsi que David, peintre de la Révolution, va devenir une figure emblématique, à partir de laquelle se développe et se construit en Allemagne un certain discours sur l'art français dont la permanence s'observe jusque dans les premières décennies du XXe siècle. David devient ainsi le représentant, non seulement de la France, mais des idées des Lumières, de la Révolution et de l'art moderne contre lesquelles se profile une certaine idée de l'art et de l'identité allemands.

The German view of Jacques-Louis David's art is perceptibly different from the French perception: if the « revolutionary » aspect interests also in France, it is perceived in Germany as a typical emanation of French Enlightment Philosophy and a characteristic aspect of national psychology. David, as the Painter of the Revolution, becomes therefore an emblematical figure of French art and philosophy, on which, to a large extent, is found and constructed the German discourse on French art, which lasts until the first decades of the 20th century. David becomes thus the representative, not only of France, but also of the ideas of Enlightment and the Revolution and of modern art against which a certain idea of German art and identity has progressively been elaborated.
