520			_aDans le Traité de sociologie générale, Pareto a livré sous le nom de « théorie des résidus et des dérivations », une théorie sociologique des croyances collectives encore in statu nascendi, d’où sa relative obscurité. L’auteur de cet article propose de distinguer trois esquisses de théories idéal-typiques nettement différenciées (anthropologique, psychologique et épistémologique), à partir des analogies et exemples présentés par Pareto comme paradigmatiques. Ces trois théories, compatibles entre elles, constituent virtuellement une théorie très intégrative et très puissante, desservie par la polysémie des termes « résidu » et « dérivation » dont le sens varie en fonction des perspectives. L’auteur explicite la signification de cette théorie pluri-perspectiviste au sein des grands débats contemporains en sociologie et en philosophie des sciences sociales.

These three theories, compatible with each other, virtually constitute a very integrative and powerful theory, which is hampered by the polysemous use of the key terms “residue” and “derivation,” whose meaning varies according to the perspective. The author endeavors to show the significance of this pluri-perspectivist theory in the major contemporary debates in sociology and philosophy of social sciences.
