520			_aLe couple formé par la ville espagnole de León et la communauté indigène de Sutiaba est une conséquence du déplacement de la capitale provinciale opéré en 1610 après un tremblement de terre. Depuis cette époque, les relations interethniques sont restées difficiles. L’annexion des terres de San Juan Bautista Subtiava par le municipe « espagnol » en 1902, n’a pas contribué à réduire les tensions, bien au contraire. La fracture sociale et ethnique qui oppose l’ancienne ville coloniale (à l’est) et le quartier indigène (à l’ouest) reste très forte. Elle a un impact à la fois sur les paysages urbains et sur les pratiques sociales des habitants. Notre objectif est ici d’analyser les mécanismes de différentiation sociospatiale qui s’expriment de chaque côté de la ville et qui alimentent les revendications identitaires des populations locales afin de mettre à l’épreuve deux notions clefs des sciences sociales contemporaines : la justice spatiale et la gouvernance urbaine.

Interethnic relations have been difficult ever since. The annexation of the lands of San Juan Bautista Subtiava by the “Spanish” municipe in 1902 did not help to reduce tensions, on the contrary. The social and ethnic cleaving contrasting the old colonial city (the eastern part) and the Indian quarter (the western) remains very strong. This has an impact on the urban landscapes and on the social practices of the inhabitants. Our objective here is to analyse the mechanisms of sociospatial differentiation at work on each side of the city contributing to the identity claims of the local populations. We also critically discuss two key notions in contemporary social science : spatial justice and urban governance.
