520			_aS’engager dans le métier de Marin de commerce répondait traditionnellement à une « vocation ». Cette conception vocationnelle d’entrée dans la profession continue d’être mobilisée par une majorité des acteurs et tend à cacher les mécanismes de reproduction sociale à l’œuvre au sein du groupe. Peu connu et contraignant, le métier réclame aujourd’hui plus qu’hier certaines propriétés sociales bien spécifiques. À partir d’une enquête par questionnaire et par entretiens auprès des élèves des écoles d’officiers de la Marine Marchande, cet article propose de cerner les conditions sociales d’élaboration des dispositions pour cette profession chez ces élèves, en examinant de près les socialisations qui participent à la reproduction du métier de Marin. Il apparaît ainsi que, pour devenir officier de la Marine Marchande, il est nécessaire de réunir des dispositions héritées ou acquises lors des socialisations primaire et anticipatrice.

This idea regarding entering the profession continues to be operational among a majority of those concerned and tends to hide the social reproduction mechanisms at the heart of the profession. Little known and ridden with obligations, the job requires more now than ever a certain number of specific social characteristics. This paper, based on a study of student officers in the Merchant Marine including a questionnaire and interviews, focuses on identifying the social conditions enabling the development of the dispositions necessary to the adoption of the profession, and looks closely at the modes of socialisation that lead to the reproduction of the profession of merchant mariner. It transpires that to become an officer in the Merchant Marines it is necessary to have acquired or inherited a certain number of dispositions during a first stage of socialisation, or in anticipation of a professionalisation.
