Soulever la question de l’apprentissage de la lecture est la garantie de débats passionnés aussi bien chez les spécialistes de l’éducation que dans le grand public alors que celle de la maîtrise des gestes graphiques de l’écriture suscite un intérêt poli voire un dédain affiché. L’histoire longue de cet apprentissage lié à l’enfance montre pourtant combien il croise les chemins de l’histoire culturelle, sociale, économique et technique.
