Fontaine apportait cependant au pouvoir républicain une sécurité politique totale, au-delà même de ce qui lui était demandé. Car ce haut fonctionnaire entretenait avec les dirigeants de centre gauche des relations de fidélité étroites. Sous l’autorité de « grands ministres », il parvint à agir avec une relative efficacité, malgré une faible autonomie. However, Fontaine brought complete political security to the republican powers, even beyond what he was asked, because this high-ranking civil servant maintained close ties with left-wing leaders. Under the authority of “great ministers,” he could act with relative effectiveness despite little autonomy.
