Œuvre sur un graveur, écrite par un graveur, le Mémoire est par ailleurs un hommage à l’image, capable – aussi bien, voire mieux que le texte – de consacrer l’immortalité de l’artiste. | ||

Wishing to complement the biographical sketch of the engraver, included in Perrault’s Les Hommes illustres, Papillon continues with the same tradition, namely that of the lives of illustrious men. As a result, encomiastic topics, heroic patterns characteristics of tales and novels of courtly love, and comparison with the best artists, in this case Poussin, contribute to the presentation of Chauveau as the archetypal artist, both inspired and independent. Being the work on an engraver, written by an engraver, the Mémoire is also a tribute to the figurative art, capable—as well as, or better than the text—of conferring immortality on the artist. | ||
