520 _aThis essay is presented in the form of a transtemporal dialogue between observations that shed light on the figure of the machine. The latter is considered as a self-referring loop that captivates and channels individual desires, and ‘‘feeds’’ on these desires in that it integrates them into its structure. The objective of the essay is also to discern the vanishing lines of the examined mechanical order. To achieve this, dialogue form is used to break with the common practice of linear development. This form encourages an examination of the technosphere as a system of echoes, the future of which emerges from the resonance of history, and which can be deviated from by the introduction of dissonant facts. Carried out within the framework of the Swiss National Fund for Science Sinergia project ‘‘PostCarWorld,’’ the paper focuses in particular on the figure of the car, considered as a contemporary emblem of the technosphere.
