520 _aThe nine manuscripts by Esprit-Conrad Mouren, the ex-secretary of the Municipality of Tarascon, illustrate how the Revolution was perceived, analysed, and lived by a part-time participant. By obtruding into his daily life, the Revolution disrupted Mouren’s personal writing habits and changed his initial project that was to be constantly modified by an author caught up in his deep passion for the events he experienced so intensely, as reflected in their description in his manuscripts. The Revolution fascinated Mouren as much as it troubled him. Confronted by the “radicalization” of political strife, and the increase in violence, Mouren followed the road of political moderation in search of a consensual political balance that would prove almost impossible to find in the bitterly divided South of France.
