Dans une perspective institutionnaliste, ceux-ci battent en brèche les schémas économiques classiques et néo-classiques. Afin d’intégrer le conflit, les règles ou encore les traditions nationales dans leur grille d’analyse, les spécialistes de « Relations industrielles » ont volontiers recourt à l’histoire. L’examen des travaux de J. R. Commons, de S. Perlman et de J. T. Dunlop montre cependant que, d’un auteur à l’autre, les conditions d’usage du matériau historique ne sont pas du tout similaires.
