520 _aThe French translation of the terms Darstellung and Darstellbarkeit in The Interpretation of Dreams has always been problematic, as subsequent editions and the debate among some French authors have shown. We thus choose to translate Darstell-, by remainingstill staying within the semantic scope field of figure (figuration, mise en figure), since the conceptual meaning of the Freudian text seems to justify this translation approach. Freud identified three different elements of a the dream: the discrete representations of dream thoughts, which that represent the raw material of the dream –the Vorstellungen–; the Darstellungen, which that are involved during dream work to produce images; and Bilder, the real end product of this work. The Darstellbarkeit is therefore this unconscious function that does not only operate at the level of the dream economy to estimate how much its raw material is capable of becoming an image, but that actively transforms this material into images as a result of the Darstellungen’s influence. This transformation work heralds the beginning of an ontology-semiology of images in psychoanalysis that still requires theorizationa.
