Les insurgés convergèrent autour de Caen, mais ne parvinrent pas à s’en emparer. L’épisode a suscité une vive controverse historiographique depuis le xixe siècle, récemment relancée. Faut-il y voir la démonstration de l’anglophobie latente de la population normande confrontée à l’occupant ? La preuve que la « nation France » n’existait pas seulement dans la propagande des Valois, mais aussi dans le cœur de leurs sujets, quand bien même ils avaient été contraints de prêter serment à la double monarchie ? Christophe Maneuvrier a proposé récemment une relecture originale de cet événement : une révolte frumentaire aurait été travestie en insurrection patriotique par la propagande des Valois. La présente étude vise à souligner les faiblesses de cette réinterprétation et à étayer la thèse d’un soulèvement anglophobe.

The insurgents converged on Caen, but failed to capture it. Since the 19th century, the episode generated a spirited historiographical controversy, which has recently been revived. Should it be seen as a demonstration of the latent Anglophobia of the Norman population faced with the occupier? Or was it proof that the “nation of France” existed not only the propaganda of the Valois, but also in the hearts of theirs subjects, even though they had been forced to swear an oath to the dual monarchy? Christophe Maneuvrier has recently proposed an original re-reading of the event: a frumentary revolt may have been disguised as a patriotic insurrection by the Valois propaganda. The aim of this study is to highlight the weaknesses of this reinterpretation and to support the theory that it was an Anglophobic uprising.
