520			_aRésuméLes sources anciennes témoignent que, lorsque le dèmos athénien a besoin de confier une mission diplomatique à l’extérieur de la polis, le choix converge vers le citoyen que l’on peut définir comme « spécial » pour le status que lui confère temporairement la décision du peuple, mais aussi pour les caractéristiques personnelles qui ont déterminé son choix. La démocratie a besoin de ces citoyens « spéciaux » surtout dans les relations extérieures, mais elle doit aussi vérifier leur incorruptibilité et leur fidélité. À ce propos, dans une constante transformation de la perception de l’ambassadeur dans son interaction avec les institutions démocratiques, nous pouvons identifier deux approches démocratiques différentes de l’ambassade, que l’on distingue sur la base de l’ autonomia réelle en disponibilité de la polis à un moment historique déterminé.

Democracy needed “special” citizens, especially in external relations, but also needed to verify their incorruptibility and loyalty. In this regard, in a constant transformation of the perception of the ambassador in his interaction with the democratic institutions, we can identify two different democratic approaches to the embassy, distinguishable on the basis of the real autonomia available to the polis in a specific historical moment.
