Sa hiérarchisation contrastait avec la relative simplicité des systèmes en vigueur chez ses voisins occidentaux. Plusieurs innovations lui sont attribuables : l’introduction des marques de valeur sur la monnaie de bronze qui dura de 498 au début du viiie siècle, la datation annuelle systématique du bronze de 537 au début du viiie siècle, et une maitrise inégalée dans la purification des métaux ainsi que dans la conduite des différents procédés de dévaluation. Au cours du xie siècle, Byzance mit en œuvre la production de monnaies bombées dites « scyphates » typiques ensuite de la période tardive. | ||

It demonstrated a pioneering mastery of refining and debasement processes of gold coins and invented in the wake of the latter in the eleventh century the curious cup-shape (so-called scyphate) that became typical of the Late Byzantine period. | ||
